Snow fell gently from the gray sky, covering the grass that was already long-hidden in more fluffy layers of white. Smoke rose from a chimney on the outskirts of Ponyville, at the edge of the Everfree Forest.
Most would assume that no one lived in this small cabin, or that some travelers had stopped by to use it as refuge from the Pegasus ponies scheduled snow on this Christmas eve day. But that was not the case. In this cabin lived a small, odd family.
Two ponies and a Draconequus to be exact.
Confusion scurried around the living-room, hanging mistletoe, ornaments, garlin, tinsel, and other festive decorations in the room. Her daughter, only a few months old, Jinx, watched from her place in her playpen, amongst her many stuffed toys.
The decorations were almost finished, all that was left was the tree, which Discord should be back with in a half in a hour or so.
The Pegasus looked at the clock. "That should be enough time to make the cookies...I think..." she said as she walked toward the kitchen. She had just made it there when she heard Jinx whimper from the living room.
"Oh, Jinx!" the multicolored pony gasped as she raced back to the living room. Using her magic, very carefully as not to drop the young filly, she placed Jinx on her back and walked back to the kitchen. Pulling out Jinx's high-chair, she buckled her daughter into it and went to the refrigerator to get the needed ingredients for the cookies; vanilla, chocolate chips, flour, the measuring cup, and other needed instruments and ingredients.
After a few minutes all the ingredients were in the mixing bowl and the oven per-heated. Confusion was happy with her progress until she realized one important detail she had missed earlier.
All the pans were still in the oven.
"Oh no, oh no. That wasn't supposed to happen!...I think!" Running around the kitchen, she searched frantically for oven-mitts, Jinx, though, was finding the whole scenario absolutely hilarious.
Jinx giggled, the only thing an infant could do to express joy, shaking her rattle that was clasped between two hoofs. However, her laughter stopped abruptly as the rattle flew away, hitting a pepper shaker over and pouring its content into the mixing bowl.
Tears began to prick her eyes and she began to sniffle.
Confusion sighed in relief as she found the oven-mitts, pulling the pans out and stuffing them under cold water in the sink. Then it occurred to her- why didn't she just use her magic to get the pans out?
Good thinking Confusion, she mentally scolded herself. Sighing, she picked up a cookie sheet, putting little balls of dough in organized line and popping it into the oven. As she shut the oven door, she heard the faint sound of sniffling.
Turning around, she saw Jinx reaching toward the counter, tears in her eyes. Following her daughter's line of vision, she saw Jinx's brightly colored rattle laying on the counter top, next to an overturned pepper shaker.
Smiling warmly at her daughter, she scooped it off the counter, returning it to Jinx. All the while, wondering why nothing had spilled out of the pepper shaker.
Her thoughts were cut short as she heard the front door open. She put Jinx back in the play-pin as she walked back to the front door to greet her husband.
Discord dragged a large fir tree to the center of the room, placing it up on the tree stand before turning to Confusion. "What do you think, my Dear?"
The tree was misshapen, turned in and out a random angles. Confusion forced a smile on her lips. "It's...A Christmas tree..." The 'I think' was said so quietly it wasn't heard.
"Was something burning?" Discord asked as he 'straightened' the tree on the stand.
"Um, it was, but it's fine now..."
"You should air the house out. We could take Jinx out to play in the snow while it does." Discord offered.
"Yeah, that's a good idea...I think..."
xXxXx
All dressed in warm clothing, the family ventured out into the snow. Jinx rolled in the fluffy white snow, giggling like mad and Confusion sat beside her, trying (key word trying) to make a large snow boulder so that they could make a snow pony.
To say it nicely, she completely failed at it.
Even after two hours of work, it was still just a big blob. Jinx yawned, holding her hoofs out to signal she wanted to be held. Discord bent over, scooping his daughter up.
"Are you tired, my Dear?" he asked the infant. Jinx blinked sleepily in response. "I think it's about time to go in." He said this loud enough so that Confusion could hear.
"Yeah..." She agreed. As they made their way back to the house Confusion's nose twitched "Oh no! The cookies! She screeched, running full force toward the house. As she open the door, what seemed to be thousands of little brightly colored balls flew out, toward the Everfree forest.
The living room was a complete wreak, everything seeming to be eaten away. Confusion disregarded it for a moment, running to get the burning cookies out of the oven. She burned her hoofs, not bothering to grab the oven-mitts and threw the cookie sheet into the sink under cold water.
Trudging back to the living-room, she met Discord in the doorway.
Confusion looked around the disaster of a house. All she wanted was to make a wonderful first Christmas for Jinx and herself- Discord as well. But now, now, it was all ruined. The decorations were a disaster, the snow pony deformed, the baking a complete wreak. She felt tears prick her eyes.
"I'm sorry-" she began to say.
"Hehe." Confusion's ears perked at the musical, pure giggle of a child- her child. Jinx giggled contently from her place in Discord's arms, as if she'd been enjoying herself the whole time.
"No need to apologize, my Dear. I told you, it's not any fun without a little chaos, don't you agree?" Discord said, a grin forming on his lips.
"And not everything is ruined..." he trailed off.
Confusion looked up, the puzzlement clear on her face. Discord didn't say a word, just pointed up to the top of the door-frame where they currently stood.
Hanging from a small, metal hook was brightly colored green leafs, crimson red berries intertwined with the long, lush foliage.
Mistletoe.
As realization hit Confusion, her cheeks burned fiery red.
"I think-" the pony was cut off as Discord pressed his lips to her own.
It was gentle-chaste even. His lips tasted of honeysuckle, she noted from the haze of her mind.
Discord pulled away a moment later, looking down at Jinx as she huffed at the lack of affection toward herself.
"Do you feel left out, my Dear?" As if answering him, the young filly let out a yelp.
"Alright, alright." Holding Jinx up higher in his arms, he pressed a kiss to his daughter's forehead.
Jinx chirped in delight.
Now, it might not have been the Christmas that she had hoped for, but it was memorable, nonetheless. And after all, what makes Christmas Christmas is when you're with your family.
~Merry Christmas~
